A full-time research position in the area of Optical MEMS / Nanophotonics / LIDAR Systems at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. We are working in partnership with a Bozeman company to develop new concepts and systems for advanced mobile LIDAR and optical processors that will be enabled by novel MEMS and nanophotonics technologies.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and creative person who is looking for an opportunity to work at the forefront of LIDAR system concepts and LIDAR-motivated beam management technologies (based on MEMS and nanophotonics devices). The position offers significant opportunity for innovation at both the device and system levels. This is a leadership position, affording the chance to work with and mentor engineering graduate students, manage technical aspects of the project and interface with key stakeholders. You will work on a team that includes students and multiple faculty and other senior research engineers/scientists working on related technologies at Montana State University and at our corporate research partner.

The primary responsibility is to conduct research to develop new concepts and systems for advanced mobile LIDAR and optical processors that will be enabled by novel MEMS and nanophotonics technologies. Responsibilities include co-mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and writing publications and reports.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
An MS degree in engineering, physics, or closely related field
Experience in optical system design, analysis and construction
Previous primary authorship of one or more research publications
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Ph.D. degree, or M.S. degree + 3 years of experience
Project management experience
Proficiency in one or more of the following technical areas:laser beam physics and practical beam management systems;
optical simulation with Zemax;
nanophotonics design and simulation (FDTD or RCWA approaches);
finite element modeling and multiphysics simulations for MEMS (Ansys or Comsol);
micro-electro-mechanical-systems design and fabrication experience;
electronics design

This project is funded by the US Air Force and requires US Citizenship or permanent residency.

have teamwork skills and ability to serve as a research mentor

Continuation of employment is contingent upon the availability of funding.
